Our October demonstrator was Ian Ethell who demonstrated a multi-axis bud vase with colour and liming.
An oblong was turned to round between centres using a spindle roughing gouge which had a dovetail spigot at one end for a four jaw chuck.
A half inch glass tube (from Amazon) was used for the centre of the bud vase.
A Jacobs chuck was used to drill down the centre of the wood to accommodate the glass tube being careful to back out and clear chippings the deeper you drill.
Using a Stebcentre in the tailstock and headstock the work was offset by 12mm and then turned to expose the bud vase half way down its length. It was then reversed and off centred on the opposite side to turn and expose the bud vase, again half way down its length.
Each side was then sanded being careful due to it being off centre. Once side was black spirit stained with paper put down the centre so the stain did not stain the inside of the hole. The stain was then covered when dry with liming wax, this was left for 15 minutes, then polished off.
The work was then put between centres and the outside diameters cleaned up and polished, then it was parted off, finished with one end hollow to enable it to stand upright.
Also on display at this meeting was Deborah the Zebra, a beautiful rocking horse made by Max Jenman.
