Our July demonstrator was Martin Saban-Smith who in his own words is a more artistic than practical tuner and who’s emphasis is on form over figure. One of the current influences on Martin’s work is the Japanese turner Eiko Tanaka and the demonstration he gave us was a Japanese style lidded box.
The box was made from ash and it had a padauk lid.
Martin uses his own Hampshire Sheen finishing products which comprised of various dyes which were applied by hand, thin sanding sealer and coloured waxes.
He used a split jam chuck to hold the thin lid in order to finish turning to size and shape.
