Our July demonstrator was Martin Saban-Smith who in his own words is a more artistic than practical tuner and who’s emphasis is on form over figure. One of the current influences on Martin’s work is the Japanese turner Eiko Tanaka and the demonstration he gave us was a Japanese style lidded box.
The box was made from ash and it had a padauk lid.
Martin uses his own Hampshire Sheen finishing products which comprised of various dyes which were applied by hand, thin sanding sealer and coloured waxes.
He used a split jam chuck to hold the thin lid in order to finish turning to size and shape.
The July competition was a box for the novices and any recently completed item of their choice for our more experienced turners.
Thank you to all who took part, the results were as follows;
Novice Competition Results;
1st; Phil Kendall Joint 2nd; Keith Copus & Phil Davis
Experienced Competition Results;
1st; Peter Dixon 2nd; Brian Ford
3rd; Roy Hadley
Thank you to all those who entered the competition.
Our next meeting is Thursday 31st August when the competition topic for the novices is a platter.
Looking forward to seeing you all then.
